Let's talk Inflammation & Joint Pain

So, what is Inflammation exactly?
I know we've all had some part of our bodies swollen at one point or another which we could visibly see, but did you know that other parts inside your body can be inflamed as well? Inflammation is a localized physical condition in which part of the body becomes reddened, swollen, hot, and often painful, especially as a reaction to injury or infection - and sometimes, you can't see it.

"Inflammation is a natural immune response. It's meant to protect the body and maintain normal tissue repair when injured. Sometimes when a person has an autoimmune disease such as arthritis the natural immune response begins to damage and fight good tissue which causes pain for the person who has said disease. The body responds as if normal tissues are infected or somehow abnormal. As you can imagine this does cause quite a bit of discomfort for the individual.

Some of the symptoms of hidden inflammation that isn't creating visible swelling is joint pain, restricted range of motions accompanied by the joint pain and loss of joint function. Inflammation can also start to effect the internal organs such as the heart and lungs.

In research done, we've come to realize that there are some ingredients we can incorporate into our food and supplement regime to help us combat our inflammation pain. If you've been in to see Dr. Casey at all you might have noticed the signs around the office suggesting her supplements - one of them you'll see on there is Turmeric.

What is Turmeric?
Turmeric is a spice that comes from the turmeric plant. It's often found in Indian cuisine and is a main ingredient in curry. However the root of turmeric is also used to make medicine. It contains a yellow-colored chemical called curcumin.

What does Turmeric do?
Science has found that turmeric helps to reduces pain, inflammation and stiffness related to autoimmune diseases mentioned above. Upon many other uses such as but not limited to; relieving heart burn, headaches, colds, menstrual problems, etc

In our office we have a product that is formulated specifically to help with inflammation in the body and to help reduce the pain associated with it. That product is called Inflamma-bLOX. Inflamma-bLOX is an ortomolecular product which turmeric is a main acting agent.

Here is some information regarding Inflamma-bLOX taken from Ortho Molecular's website. You can find more information on Ortho Molecular and their products here.

"Inflamma-bLOX provides a blend of nutrients to support a healthy inflammatory cycle, helping to balance eicosanoid and cytokine metabolism and inhibit the synthesis of a wide variety of compounds implicated in pain and inflammation. Inflamma-bLOX is a comprehensive formula designed to address immune challenges and help maintain a healthy inflammatory response. It provides a blend of phytonutrients including skullcap, bee propolis, turmeric and Graminex® G60 Pollen Extract for full-spectrum support."

What are the other ingredients in Inflamma-bLOX?

Skullcap
An extract of the root of Scutellaria baicalensis, this popular Chinese botanical has been shown to modulate viral activity and support cardiovascular health. Skullcap possesses potent antioxidant properties, and research has shown it attenuates NFkB and inhibits COX-2 expression. According to a recent study, the botanical boosts immune response to certain pathogens and supports normal respiration by protecting airways and preserving normal mitochondrial function.
Propolis
Bees create propolis by collecting a resinous sap from trees and then mixing it with wax within the hive. Propolis has a diverse variety of potent terpenes and benzoic, caffeic, cinnamic, and phenolic acids. It is also high in flavonoids, which may account for many of its health benefits.
Turmeric (Curcumin)
Curcumin, the active compound in turmeric, an orange-colored spice used for thousands of years in cooking and medicine, has been shown to have strong NFkB-modulating properties and plays a crucial role in balancing inflammation. Studies have also shown that curcumin supports the maintenance of remission from ongoing inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract, and promotes both gastrointestinal mucosal health and reduces stomach lining discomfort.
Graminex® G60 Pollen Extract
Graminex® G60 Pollen Extract is a high concentration, diverse array of phytochemicals with broad spectrum inflammatory balancing properties. They have been used successfully to maintain normal levels of inflammation.
